A Casa

In A Casa, Italian photographer Guido Guidi turns his camera towards his family home in Ronta, near Cesena, Italy. Bought by his father in the 1950s, the house has been part of Guidi’s life for decades. It is where he lives and works, keeps his photographic archive, and welcomes friends and younger artists. The exhibition brings together photographs taken there in the 1980s and more recently, offering a personal look at a place that has changed alongside the people who live in it.

Born in Cesena in 1941, Guidi has spent more than five decades photographing the built environment, with a particular interest in the ordinary landscapes of Italy. His photographs often focus on places between the city and the countryside: roads, houses, industrial areas, residential streets and buildings that might otherwise go unnoticed. Rather than looking for dramatic views or iconic architecture, he pays attention to the details of everyday surroundings and the ways they change over time.

Guidi studied architecture in Venice, where he became interested in how buildings and landscapes are understood and experienced. His way of seeing was also shaped by the work of architect and writer Bruno Zevi, vernacular architecture and Dutch landscape painting. These influences helped develop his interest in the relationship between people and the places they inhabit. In projects such as In Veneto. 1984–89, Per Strada and In Sardegna, he turns his attention to different parts of Italy, photographing the landscapes, buildings and everyday scenes he encounters along the way.

In A Casa, Guidi brings this approach into a place he knows intimately. He photographs rooms, furniture, familiar objects and agricultural tools connected to his father’s life. His father worked as a carpenter before becoming a farmer, and traces of this history remain throughout the house.

The photographs are quiet and attentive. A corner of a room, an everyday object or the way light falls across a surface can become the focus of an image. Guidi returns to similar subjects, making subtle variations rather than trying to capture one definitive view. The images show how a familiar place can look different depending on the light, the moment and the passage of time. The house also holds memories of Guidi’s father and their family life. Rather than explaining these memories directly, Guidi photographs the spaces and objects that remain. The work becomes a personal reflection on family, time and the connection between a person and the place they call home.

The exhibition at Large Glass in London, presented in collaboration with TIDE, also includes a contribution from American photographer and bookmaker John Gossage, Guidi’s longtime friend. During visits to Guidi’s home, Gossage made a sequence of six books using photographs he had taken there. Created as a gift and tribute to Guidi, the books reflect both their friendship and Gossage’s own way of seeing the house.

The two photographers approach the same place from their own perspectives. Alongside Guidi’s photographs, Gossage’s books offer another view of a home that has been an important part of their relationship. A casa was presented at Large Glass from 28 November 2025 to 28 February 2026.

Guidi’s interest in ordinary places has developed throughout his career. In Tra l’altro, 1976–81, a book selected from his archive by Marcello Galvani, 94 colour photographs made with small-format cameras offer a look at an earlier stage of his work. Mostly unpublished, the images were taken between 1976 and 1981, as Guidi moved from the black-and-white snapshots of his early years towards the colour photography he began exploring with a large-format 8×10 camera in the early 1980s.

The photographs include vernacular buildings, ordinary people and unexpected details caught while moving through the world. The title, which can mean “by the way” or “among other things,” reflects the nature of these passing observations. Guidi has described them as a way of making contact with the outside world.

Across his work, Guidi continues to return to the places around him, looking carefully at what is already there. Whether photographing a street, a rural landscape or his own family home, he approaches photography as a way of paying attention to the world and to his own experience of it.
