BJARKE INGELS Sabine is a material explorer. Simple straightforward designs where the intent and innovation is in the thoughtful curation of the material. Whether epoxy resin in her candy cubes, or colorized glass or different shades of stone, the materiality is the message. In her collaboration with Laila Gohar and Solid Nature, she color curated slabs of travertine to a gradient from white to red. The hues of stone are matched with a color gradient of the stained glass tabletop. The result is heavy and light, solid and transparent - all united by the same color transition from clear glass to red travertine.

The Project

For Milan Design Week 2023, in collaboration with Solid Nature, Studio Sabine Marcelis introduced a 7-meter- long dining table and accompanying bar.

This site-specific installation goes beyond the typical design expectation, as the emphasis is placed on the base of the table, which visibly extends above the tabletop.

The table was activated by culinary artist Laila Gohar, who curated a buffet of food on the table, following the colour palette of the travertine and matching the textures of the food with the natural stone.

Crafted from various types of travertine stone, known for their rich textures and warm colours, the table's foundation is the core of the table, piercing through the surface to become display elements for a buffet.

The tabletop surface itself, made from Sabine Marcelis’s signature colour-treated glass, seamlessly ties these elements together.
