Jamie Johnson Michael's series on Casinos is a deep dive into part of American culture that is sometimes unseen or unrealized. His bright bold images take you into the casino culture as not only a voyeur but as a participant.

Documenting American Gambling Culture
Casinoland - Tired of Winning is the culmination of over 30 years of photographic exploration by Michael Rababy, documenting gambling culture across the United States. The series captures the stark contrast between the colorful, glittering lights of casinos and the often exhausted, disillusioned faces of their patrons. Rababy’s work is not focused on individual gamblers but rather on casinos as institutions - places that sell dreams and promise wealth, yet overwhelmingly deliver disappointment.
The title itself references Donald Trump’s famous line about Americans “getting tired of winning,” drawing an ironic parallel between political rhetoric and the seductive, ultimately empty promises of casino culture. Through his long-term commitment, Rababy presents a sustained, critical lens on how gambling reflects broader aspects of American society, including its attraction to fantasy and spectacle.

Michael Rababy: Observing Without Participating
Michael Rababy brings a unique perspective to Casinoland because he does not gamble himself. Growing up in Southern California, he was exposed early to the colorful, over-the-top environment of Las Vegas and other casino towns, and he instinctively used photography to document what he saw. Over decades, he observed the environments firsthand, capturing the human side of gambling - the hope, the anticipation, and the fatigue - without participating in the games.
Rababy’s personal history, combined with his background in art and street photography, allows him to maintain an empathetic yet analytical eye, exploring the paradoxes of a culture built on winning and losing. His long-term observation reveals patterns and changes in casino culture, while retaining the immediacy and honesty of individual moments.

Visual Approach and Significance
Rababy’s photography is distinguished by its vivid color and sharp composition, conveying the energy, chaos, and seduction of casino environments. He carefully balances saturated visuals with realism, ensuring that the images never feel artificial despite the intensity of neon lights, signage, and reflections. The series juxtaposes visual spectacle with subtle narratives of exhaustion and disillusionment, creating a “poetry of losing” that critiques the capitalist and cultural promises embedded in gambling.
Beyond the visual documentation, the project functions as a social commentary, highlighting the disparity between glamorous advertisements and everyday reality, while also reflecting on the American dream, consumer culture, and the human tendency to chase elusive fantasies.
