MICHAEL UBBESEN Dalarö Skans offers a rare sense of retreat, where the surrounding sea and landscape create a calm isolation that feels both grounding and restorative. The historic fortress adds character, while the interiors blend classical and modern elements in a measured way. The result is understated yet indulgent, a quiet kind of luxury shaped by nature and history.

Dalarö Skans
Just south of Stockholm lies Dalarö Skans, a 17th-century fortress island with sweeping 360-degree views over the archipelago. Built as a military outpost, the island had long fallen into disrepair - a place of layered history but little direction.
In 2022, Oskar Fogstrand, Roy Ghazizadeh and Emilio Osei-Bonsu took over the site and began a transformation. What they found was a fortress filled with debris and decades of neglect. After months of clearing, restoring and reimagining, the island has been given a new life - one where cultural heritage meets modern design.
The fortress halls and surrounding structures have been carefully renovated: a glasshouse reworked into a dining space, the old commandant’s residence furnished in collaboration with Soho Home, and the vaulted cellars turned into a contemporary nightclub. Each intervention respects the raw architecture while adding a refined layer of atmosphere, blending history with a forward-looking vision.
Today, Dalarö Skans is once again alive - hosting weddings, dinners, and large-scale gatherings against the backdrop of the sea. Its calendar is fully booked seasons in advance, attracting both private guests and leading companies. More than a venue, the island has become a cultural landmark in the making - a place where centuries-old stone walls now frame a new era of design, creativity, and community.
