Hugo Mario García Moya When you think about outdoor ads, you usually get someone standing on top of a mountain, perfect weather, perfect clothes, perfect everything.

Engineered For Whatever shows us the real face of nature, the one that may not be as nice. And what better way to prove that Columbia’s gear can handle whatever nature brings than putting it through some completely unreasonable tests? It’s basically MythBusters meets Jackass, but for outdoor gear.Pure internet with a crazy level of craft. A joy to watch.

Back to the Wild

In 2025, Columbia Sportswear introduced Engineered for Whatever, its first major global brand platform in more than a decade. The Portland-based outdoor brand, founded in 1938, has built its reputation on technical clothing and equipment designed to keep people warm, dry and protected, developing technologies such as Omni-Heat™, Omni-Shade™ and Omni-Freeze™ along the way. But rather than showing another picture-perfect mountain landscape, Columbia wanted to return to something less polished: its irreverent spirit of the 1980s and ’90s.

When Nature Fights Back

Created by London agency adam&eveDDB, the campaign turns the usual outdoor advertising formula on its head. Here, nature is not calm, beautiful or particularly welcoming. People are chased by vultures, swallowed by snow, thrown by potholes and put through increasingly ridiculous encounters with the elements. The idea is simple: Columbia gear is not made for the perfect day, it is engineered for whatever happens next.

The campaign’s centrepiece is a visceral film directed by Henry-Alex Rubin, produced by SMUGGLER and shot by cinematographer Oliver Millar. Its chaotic energy is amplified by a thrash-metal version of Blue Skies, turning the familiar optimism of the classic song into something much more unruly.

The Ultimate Product Test

The same logic continues through a series of deliberately extreme product tests. Real stunt performers are strapped to snowplows to test Columbia’s Omni-Heat Infinity insulation, sent rolling down mountains inside giant snowballs to test its puffy jackets, and suspended above crocodile-infested water using a pair of ROC Utility Pants as a makeshift rope.

The scenarios are absurd, but the products are being tested for very real qualities: warmth, durability, protection and performance. The campaign borrows the visual language of MythBusters and Jackass, using spectacle and humour to make technical product features feel unexpectedly entertaining.

A New Look for Columbia

Engineered for Whatever also marked a broader change for the brand. Alongside the campaign, Columbia introduced a refreshed visual identity with a new typeface, logo lock-up, colour palette and layout system, extending across advertising, retail, social and digital platforms.

With visual effects and post-production by Framestore, the campaign combines live action, 3D CGI, hand-drawn animation and archival-inspired textures. The result feels deliberately rough around the edges, a visual language that matches Columbia’s return to a more confident, playful personality.

Built for Whatever Comes Next

Running across film, out-of-home, digital, social, retail and creative activations, the multi-season campaign positions Columbia’s technical expertise through a very human kind of chaos. Instead of promising an escape from the unpredictable side of the outdoors, Engineered for Whatever embraces it, making the brand’s long-standing focus on performance the foundation for a campaign that is as strange, physical and unpredictable as the conditions its gear is built to handle.
