MICHAEL UBBESEN Grid Coffee fascinates me through its disciplined use of structure. The exposed metal framework creates a strict, almost industrial rhythm, while the introduction of wooden surfaces adds warmth and tactility. It is a space that proves how precision and restraint can result in an interior that feels both rigorous and inspiring.

The project

Spider Creative ingeniously integrated the grid concept into the design of both the interior and exterior facades. Through meticulously designed, irregularly arranged grid patterns, the undulating landscapes of coffee-growing regions are vividly evoked. Each grid unit is endowed with a unique texture, and a primary palette of grid green highlights the distinctive charm of the design.

This design not only reinforces the brand's green identity but also introduces the marvels of nature into the urban environment, allowing people in the hustle and bustle of city life to experience a touch of tranquility and natural beauty from afar. The rising and falling of the grids resemble the breath of the earth, while the varied textures convey the story behind each coffee bean. This allows people to deeply appreciate Grid Coffee's pursuit of coffee quality and yearning for natural beauty while admiring the design's aesthetics. The design is not just a visual feast but also a spiritual experience, making Grid Coffee's interior and exterior spaces a unique bridge connecting nature, the brand, and consumers.

A crucial aspect involves integrating with local culture. Drawing inspiration from Chengdu's Shu brocade, the aim is to blend the aesthetic essence of this traditional craft into the contemporary space through modern design techniques, creating an artistic environment rich in historical and cultural significance yet contemporary in feel.

The core of the design lies in "inheritance and innovation." Elements are extracted from the rich patterns and colors of Shu brocade, such as traditional motifs like auspicious clouds, mythical beasts, flowers, and their bright yet harmonious color combinations—all unique identifiers of Shu brocade culture. These elements are cleverly deconstructed and reassembled, presented in abstract or figurative forms across various surfaces of the space, such as walls, floors, ceilings, and furniture decor, creating visual coherence and surprise.

The design approach focuses on "inheritance and innovation." Primary elements are derived from the abundant patterns and colors of Shu brocade, including traditional motifs like auspicious clouds, mythical creatures, floral patterns, and their vibrant yet harmonious color schemes—all distinctive hallmarks of Shu brocade culture. These elements are skillfully deconstructed and reorganized, appearing in either abstract or concrete forms throughout various spatial interfaces, including walls, flooring, ceilings, and furniture arrangements, achieving visual continuity and delightful surprises.
