Norm Architects perspective on the Nomos Hotel
Nomos Hotel in Rome reveals how architecture can distill history into essence. Within the walls of an 18th-century monastic building, HENRYTIMI has created interiors that are both raw and refined sculptural spaces where bold monolithic forms nod to Roman antiquity while speaking in a language of restraint and clarity.
What inspires here is the sense of balance: heavy stone and terracotta grounded to the earth, softened by light, shadow, and the patina of time. The pared-down palette, at once austere and poetic, transforms absence into presence, showing how reduction can feel profoundly luxurious. The monastic spirit that runs through the project makes space not for excess, but for reflection, silence, and memory. In its restraint lies abundance - a reminder that the simplest gestures, when carved with precision, can evoke extraordinary depth and timelessness. Nomos Hotel teaches us that to pare down is not to diminish, but to uncover the enduring spirit of place.
Nomos Hotel - Minimalism in the Heart of Rome
In the historic Regola district of Rome, just steps from Campo de’ Fiori, a former Franciscan monastery has been transformed into the Nomos Hotel. Opened in 2023, the project marks the first hospitality venture by Italian designer HENRYTIMI, known for his minimalist furniture and emphasis on pure materials.
The building dates back to the 18th century, when it served as a monastery linked to the Church of San Paolo alla Regola. Instead of masking this history, Timi chose to highlight it. Many of the original architectural elements—arched corridors, stone walls, and cloister-like layouts—have been preserved and reinterpreted with a contemporary language of simplicity and reduction.
The name Nomos, from the Greek word for “law” or “order,” reflects the philosophy behind the design. Every space follows a clear logic: clean lines, natural materials, and no excess decoration. Travertine stone, handmade terracotta, lime plaster, wood, and raw fabrics define the interiors. Even the smallest details, from furniture to lighting and fittings, were designed by Timi to maintain a consistent vision.

The hotel’s rooms, referred to as Raw Rooms, continue this restrained approach. They are intentionally pared back, offering neutral tones, sculptural furniture, and large windows that frame views of the surrounding rooftops. The goal is not to impress with luxury finishes but to create a calm environment that encourages reflection and rest.
Shared spaces include a courtyard, bar-restaurant, and lounge, which balance monastic simplicity with contemporary functionality. Together, they give the hotel a strong identity: neither a traditional luxury hotel nor a boutique experiment, but a new model for hospitality that values authenticity, history, and material honesty.
In a city known for ornate hotels and grand gestures, Nomos stands out by doing less. It is a place where heritage architecture and modern design meet, offering guests an experience rooted in both the history of Rome and the timeless principles of HENRYTIMI’s work.
