Ask og Eng An energy-positive building that produces more power than it consumes. Its location in Norway makes it particularly meaningful to us. It demonstrates how architecture, technology, and sustainability can coexist - echoing our vision of creating furniture and kitchens from responsibly sourced materials like bamboo, designed to last for generations.

Powerhouse Telemark - A New Standard in Sustainable Architecture

Powerhouse Telemark, designed by Snøhetta in collaboration with R8 Property, Skanska, and Asplan Viak, is an eleven-floor office building that produces more energy than it consumes over its 60-year lifespan, including energy from construction, demolition, and materials. The building is clad in wood and heavily insulated, with inclined planes, a 24° tilted roof, and a 45° notch on the east façade, all carefully oriented to maximize solar energy capture and daylight penetration. Photovoltaic panels generate approximately 256,000 kWh per year, feeding surplus electricity back into the grid, while geothermal wells dug 350 meters underground provide water loops for efficient heating and cooling. The project reduces net energy consumption by 70% compared to conventional new office buildings and has achieved BREEAM Excellent certification.

Functional Interiors and Flexible Workspaces

Inside, Powerhouse Telemark emphasizes adaptability and sustainability. Standardized materials and layouts - including flooring, partitions, kitchens, bathrooms, and lighting - minimize waste and simplify transitions as tenants move in and out. The building houses two stories of co-working spaces, a shared staff restaurant, penthouse meeting areas, and a rooftop terrace overlooking the fjord. Natural light is maximized to reduce reliance on artificial lighting, while a conservative and efficient lighting system complements the interior. This approach allows tenants to scale spaces as needed, providing flexibility for a changing workforce and accommodating the increasing demand for remote and hybrid work arrangements.

Craftsmanship, Materiality, and Snøhetta’s Approach

Attention to detail and local craftsmanship brings the interiors to life. Recycled tiles from Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik adorn the barception desk, Erik Jørgensen’s Corona chairs are reupholstered with leftover yarn by Grenland husflidslag, and the iconic City chair by Øivind Iversen is integrated throughout. Custom benches with integrated ventilation further enhance comfort and design cohesion. This meticulous attention to materials reflects Snøhetta’s transdisciplinary ethos, which merges architecture, landscape, interior, and product design, prioritizing environmental and cultural sensitivity.

Powerhouse Telemark demonstrates how innovative design can harmonize sustainability, human experience, and artisanal skill in a functional, forward-thinking office environment.
